That 8-5 team does deserve it
If the criteria - "Conference Champion" is met, then regardless of the record, that team belongs in the playoff. It is a let down when this happens but that is not the fault of the playoff and is instead all on the conference in general and their focus on things other than football and the institutions in the conference caring little for supporting strong programs.
Take Miami and Pitt as example, NO SCHOOL can be taken serious or considered BIG TIME if they do not have an on campus dedicated football stadium. All of the best programs have a track record of the president + Athletic Director + Head Coach sharing the same principles regarding the program and each commit and act as their roles demand and permit.
It is not that the ACC might land an "undeserving 8-5 team" into the play off but that the ACC had a pretty good chance of producing such an "underserving 8-5 champion" lately. Frankly, in my opinion, the ACC has sucked in football since the Big East raid. I dunno if that is karma or not, but in spite of an odd team here or there or the Clemson streak which looked more like being the tallest midget in the bunch, the ACC has been the weakest and lowest paid P5 conference for almost 20 years.
That is the fault of the conference, not the playoff system.
